These days, many manufacturers include some sort of blue light filter or "night light" in their phones' ROMs. Google, Samsung, OnePlus, and some other companies are on the list, and Sony was as well with its "Good night actions" function in Xperia Actions for phones in the XA1 family. However, following the impending Oreo updates, no Sony phone will have a built-in blue light filter.

This news comes by way of Sony Xperia's official Twitter account.

If there's one feature that people have consistently been clamoring for from Android, it's dark mode. As it turns out, people don't always like staring at masses of bright white, especially when they're in dark environments.

Android P feature spotlight: Night Light toggle now tells you when it'll turn on

Now that a large portion of our daily lives is spent staring at a screen, we've started becoming more and more concerned that this behavior may impact our circadian rhythms and the quantity and quality of our sleep. The hypothesis goes that humans have evolved to sync their sleep cycles to the cycle of the Sun, and that shining the pale blue glow of a phone screen into our eyes at night throws that sync off-balance and prevents our brain from recognizing when it's time to sleep.

Opera is one of the most popular alternatives to Google's own Chrome browser and with good reason. It blocks ads, saves data, and has an excellent reader mode. There's also Opera Mini for an even faster, lighter experience. Another reason for Opera's popularity is active development. Already this year, in a reaction to an increasing fear among users, a crypto-mining blocker was added to both versions.

The main mobile browser has a separate Play Store listing for its beta version, and a new update has just been released for it.

30 Android apps with dark themes that are easy on the eyes

0

Personally, I love dark themes in apps. Oftentimes, one of the first things I do is switch to the Night or Dark Mode in every one that supports it. Since I know that I'm not the only one out there that wants my apps to reflect my soul, I gathered together thirty to help some of you get started on your path to the dark side.

All jokes and edginess aside, dark themes are much easier on your eyes, especially in low-light conditions, and can take a bit of stress off the batteries in phones or tablets with OLED displays.

YouTube dark theme now available for some on Android

These days, an often-seen feature request for apps (and Android in general) is dark mode. We first noticed that YouTube was preparing to bring one to its Android app in November of last year, but while the web and iOS versions have had it for months, there's only been radio silence on the Android side. However, we're now seeing several reports of dark mode being automatically activated on the YouTube Android app.

The Google Phone redesign from earlier this month was met with some conflicting opinions. While many liked the more modern UI, others couldn't stand all of the white that was added. Some hoped that Phone might soon get a dark mode, and it looks like those prayers have been answered. Google has just confirmed that Phone will indeed be getting a dark mode.

Modded Google Camera APK enables Night Sight for all Pixel devices (and it's impressive)

The guys at XDA Developers often like to tinker with APK files to enable hidden features, trigger specific behaviors, or spoil Google's surprises prematurely. Their latest software shenanigans involve Google's Camera app and the promised Night Sight feature that is supposed to come next month.

Announced with the Pixel 3, Night Sight is a low-light photography mode that ekes out every wave and particle of light to get clearer, better-lit shots in dark environments.

With the November security patch that began rolling out to Pixels last week, one change was made to the way Night Mode and Battery Saver interact. When the latter is enabled, the former immediately changes to on, and the behavior can't be modified, though you can manually switch back to off.

Take a look at the GIF below. I start off in Developer options, with Night mode set to Always off.

Xiaomi Mi 8 update includes night mode and 960fps slo-mo video recording

In my review of the Xiaomi Mi 8 and Mi 8 Pro, I was surprised by quite how good the dual rear cameras were. Both phones have the same sensors, offering imaging performance at least on a par with recent OnePlus devices while challenging much more expensive competitors. Thanks to a new update, two more features are being added to the Mi 8's camera capabilities.

Low-light photos were already pretty good on the Mi 8, but they're about to get even better.

You can now enable dark mode for web pages and content in Chrome Canary

About a month ago we reported Google was working on a dark theme for Chrome, in preparation for a wider night mode throughout Android Q. Although this was a very anticipated feature, we expected it would only darken the menus and navigation bar but still render web pages in their original colors. This was before our colleagues over at 9to5Google discovered the browser is actually able to alter a site's design and display it in a darker skin.

Samsung's One UI night mode forces Android Auto to think it's always nighttime

With One UI, Samsung introduced a system-wide night mode for its Android Pie devices. The new feature darkens the manufacturer's proprietary software such as the Calculator and Messages apps and also alters the overall menus and interface colors, but still requires you to manually enable dark mode in other applications like Messenger or Slack. Android Auto, on the other hand, happily receives this setting and defaults to it, no matter the time of the day.

Twitter shares some love with AMOLED users with true-black dark mode

Twitter was amongst the early ones to release a night mode for its app. However, even though it's been around since 2016, the interface uses shades of midnight blue rather than black, which might be easier on the eye but doesn't help save as much battery as turning the pixels off on AMOLED screens.

Dark modes are becoming increasingly popular these days. Not only do they look cool, they can also save battery on AMOLED screens, as they limit the number of pixels that need to be lit. A lot of apps have started boasting darker schemes, and following popular demand, Microsoft is working on one for OneNote, which will be available across all platforms.

About a year ago, the company announced it's overhauling its note-taking app with new features that would make it easier to use.

Google in 2017-2018: "Whiten all the things!" Google in late 2018-2019: "Darken all the things!" Google is continuing to roll out dark modes for its apps, most probably in preparation to match its upcoming OS-wide night theme. Samsung isn't known for gracefully aging devices, with previous generations quickly falling out of the company's favor. However, the firm is getting better at providing timely updates, as the Galaxy S9 received the rethought TouchWiz One UI along with Android Pie in December, giving it the same software as its successor. Now, the aging flagship received another update that improves the camera, giving it a dedicated Night Mode and further refinements.
